MIDDLE SCHOOL Languages

Learning a Language Means Understanding People.

We believe learning Spanish should be about more than memorizing vocabulary. Language gives students another way to communicate, understand people, and experience cultures beyond their own.

In Middle School, students develop their Spanish through listening, speaking, reading, and writing while also exploring the history, traditions, literature, and contemporary life of Spanish-speaking communities.

Learning Through Communication and Culture

Middle School Spanish brings language and culture together. Students build communication skills while learning how language connects people, traditions, communities, and everyday life.

Listen

Students strengthen comprehension by hearing Spanish used in meaningful contexts and learning to recognize vocabulary, pronunciation, and increasingly complex ideas.

Speak

Students practice pronunciation, conversation, and expressing their ideas in Spanish with growing confidence and independence.

Read and Write

Students build vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, and written communication skills through developmentally appropriate Spanish-language activities.

Understand Culture

Students explore the history, traditions, literature, food, and contemporary life of Spanish-speaking communities around the world.

Three Levels of Middle School Spanish

Beginner Middle School Spanish

The Beginner course introduces students to Spanish through structured practice that gradually leads toward more open-ended communication.

Students begin developing listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, and an understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures and communities.

Intermediate Middle School Spanish

Intermediate Spanish builds on students’ existing knowledge and moves them toward greater confidence and proficiency.

Students continue developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while expanding their vocabulary, grammar, and understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures.

Spanish I — High School Credit

Eligible Grade 8 students may take Spanish I for high school credit.

The course develops proficiency through listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on active communication. Students also practice interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational communication skills.

Four Connected Language Skills

Listening

Students learn to understand spoken Spanish, recognize meaning in context, and follow increasingly complex communication.

Speaking

Students develop pronunciation, conversational skills, and the confidence to communicate their ideas in Spanish.

Reading

Students expand vocabulary and comprehension through developmentally appropriate Spanish-language texts and materials.

Writing

Students organize and communicate their ideas using increasingly accurate vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure.

BUILDING COMMUNICATION

From Structured Practice to Real Conversation

Students begin with guided practice in vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and sentence structure.

As their understanding grows, they use what they have learned in conversations, collaborative activities, reading, writing, and other meaningful classroom experiences.

The goal is not simply to know Spanish vocabulary. We want students to become increasingly comfortable using the language to communicate.

LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

Learning Language. Understanding People.

Learning another language gives students more than a new way to speak. It gives them another way to understand people.

As students explore Spanish-speaking cultures, traditions, literature, and everyday life, they begin to recognize both differences and common experiences across communities.

That connection between language and people is why we believe cultural understanding belongs at the heart of language learning.
