Third Grade

Ready for New Challenges

Deeper Learning. Greater Independence.

Third Grade is a year of greater independence at Brandon Academy. Students explore subjects more deeply, think more critically, and take greater responsibility for how they learn.

They are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, make connections, explain their ideas, and approach new challenges with confidence and curiosity.

A Strong Academic Foundation

Language Arts

Third Grade language arts brings together reading, writing, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary.

Students strengthen comprehension, communicate ideas more clearly, and learn to organize their thinking through increasingly independent reading and writing.

Mathematics

Students strengthen mathematical understanding through instruction, practice, discussion, and problem solving.

They learn to approach unfamiliar questions thoughtfully, explain their reasoning, and become more confident working through multi-step challenges.

Science

Science encourages students to investigate the world around them through observation, questions, experiments, discussion, and hands-on exploration.

Students begin making stronger connections between what they discover and the scientific ideas they are studying.

Social Studies

Students develop a broader understanding of people, places, communities, geography, and culture.

They learn to connect information, consider different perspectives, and better understand their place in the wider world.

Thinking With Purpose

Ask Questions. Make Connections.

Third Grade students move beyond simply remembering information. They are encouraged to ask questions, consider new ideas, and make connections across subjects.

Class discussions and collaborative activities give students opportunities to explain their thinking, listen to different perspectives, and develop ideas of their own.

Language Arts in Every Direction

Reading

Students explore increasingly complex texts while strengthening comprehension, fluency, and confidence as readers.

Writing

Students organize their thoughts, develop ideas, and communicate clearly through a variety of writing experiences.

Grammar

Grammar instruction helps students understand how language works and use that knowledge to strengthen their writing.

Spelling

Students develop spelling skills that support greater accuracy and confidence in their writing.

Vocabulary

A growing vocabulary helps students understand what they read and express their ideas with greater clarity and precision.

Personal Growth

Growing Into Independent Learners

Third Grade is an important year for building independence. Students begin taking greater responsibility for assignments, organization, participation, and the choices they make as learners.

With guidance and encouragement from their teachers, students learn to work through challenges, reflect on their progress, and become more confident in their ability to learn independently.

More Ways to Learn Each Week

Third Grade students also participate in weekly special classes that add creativity, movement, language, and new experiences to the school week.

P.E.

Physical education develops movement skills, coordination, teamwork, confidence, and healthy habits.

Music

Students explore rhythm, performance, movement, and musical expression while building confidence and creativity.

Art

Students explore visual creativity, artistic techniques, and opportunities to communicate ideas through their own work.

Spanish

Students continue developing Spanish vocabulary, communication skills, and cultural awareness through age-appropriate lessons and activities.
