HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH

Read as Writers. Write as Readers.

The High School English program asks students to study both the art and craft of language.

Through close reading, thoughtful discussion, frequent writing, and independent reading, students examine how writers create meaning while developing their own ability to communicate with clarity, purpose, and confidence.

How Students Engage With Language

Close Reading

Students examine texts carefully, paying attention to language, structure, evidence, and the choices writers make.

Thoughtful Discussion

Classroom discussion gives students opportunities to test ideas, consider different interpretations, and explain their thinking with evidence.

Purposeful Writing

Students write frequently in both formal and informal settings as they develop, organize, revise, and strengthen their ideas.

Independent Reading

We encourage students to read beyond assigned texts, building a reading life shaped by curiosity, personal interest, and a genuine love of learning.

READING WITH PURPOSE

How Writers Create Meaning

Students read influential works from different eras, genres, and cultures while paying close attention to the choices authors make.

They examine diction, syntax, structure, allusion, figurative language, purpose, audience, and historical context. The goal is not simply to understand what a text says, but to understand how it creates meaning.

As students discuss and write about what they read, they learn to support their interpretations with evidence and explain their thinking clearly.

A Writing Process Built Through Practice

Prewriting

Students explore ideas, gather evidence, and determine what they want to say, why it matters, and who they are writing for.

Drafting

Students organize their thinking and begin turning ideas into a complete written response.

Feedback

Teachers and classmates help students see their work from another perspective, ask better questions, and identify opportunities to strengthen it.

Revision

Students rethink ideas, organization, diction, sentence structure, and supporting evidence to make their writing clearer and more effective.

Publication

Students prepare selected work for presentation or submission, learning that strong writing is shaped through attention, reflection, and revision.

A Four-Year English Journey

Grade 9

Literature & Composition I Honors

Students strengthen close reading, analytical writing, discussion, grammar, vocabulary, and independent reading skills.

The course introduces students to increasingly complex literature while helping them learn how to support interpretations with evidence and communicate ideas clearly.

Grade 10

Literature & Composition II Honors

Students build on the skills developed in Grade 9 through more challenging reading, writing, and discussion.

They continue refining literary analysis, composition, vocabulary, grammar, and independent reading while becoming more confident and precise communicators.

Grade 11

AP English Language & Composition

Students study how writers use language to inform, persuade, explain, and shape ideas.

Through close reading, rhetorical analysis, argument writing, research, and discussion, students develop the skills needed to evaluate complex texts and communicate effectively.

Grade 12

AP English Literature & Composition

Students engage deeply with imaginative literature while examining how authors use language, structure, style, and literary technique to create meaning.

The course emphasizes close reading, analytical writing, discussion, and the ability to develop thoughtful interpretations supported by textual evidence.

READING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Reading That Continues Beyond the Classroom

The High School English program encourages students to read beyond assigned classroom texts and develop a genuine relationship with books and ideas.

Independent reading gives students room to follow their interests, encounter new perspectives, and strengthen the habits that support thoughtful discussion, stronger writing, and continued learning.
