First Grade

WELCOME TO FIRST GRADE

Building on a Strong Beginning

First Grade builds on the strong foundation students developed in Kindergarten while helping them become more confident readers, writers, thinkers, and problem solvers.

Throughout the year, students strengthen essential academic skills, learn to communicate their ideas clearly, work successfully with others, and take greater responsibility for their learning.

Growing as Readers, Writers & Thinkers

Listening & Reading

Students strengthen reading skills through careful listening, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and engaging stories. They learn to understand what they read and share their ideas with growing confidence.

Writing & Sharing

Students organize their thoughts, express ideas clearly, and communicate what they have learned through developmentally appropriate writing experiences.

Addition & Subtraction

Students build greater fluency with addition and subtraction while developing a stronger understanding of numbers, patterns, and mathematical relationships.

Problem Solving

Students learn to approach problems with curiosity and persistence. They explore different strategies, explain their thinking, and discover that there can be more than one way to reach a solution.
A Supportive Classroom Community

Learning Happens Together

First Grade classrooms are active places where students listen, discuss, ask questions, share ideas, and learn from one another.

Our teachers provide the structure and encouragement students need while helping them build independence, recognize their progress, and become more confident learners.

A Week Filled With Discovery

First Grade students also participate in special classes that bring creativity, movement, language, and new experiences into the school week.

Art

Students explore creativity, technique, and self-expression through visual art.

Music

Students build confidence and musical understanding through singing, rhythm, movement, and participation.

P.E.

Physical education helps students develop coordination, movement skills, confidence, teamwork, and healthy habits.

Spanish

Students are introduced to Spanish through age-appropriate vocabulary, conversation, activities, and cultural connections.
