Middle School Mathematics

Understanding Concepts. Communicating Ideas. Solving Problems.

Middle School Mathematics at Brandon Academy helps students build the knowledge, reasoning, and confidence they need for increasingly advanced coursework.

Students strengthen mathematical foundations, explain their thinking clearly, apply concepts in new situations, and develop the problem-solving habits that prepare them for High School mathematics.

Four Parts of a Strong Mathematics Program

Conceptual Foundations

Students build a strong understanding of mathematical concepts so they can apply what they know as coursework becomes more advanced.

Mathematical Communication

Students explain their reasoning in writing and conversation, helping them understand not only the answer, but why it works.

Creative Problem-Solving

Students learn to approach unfamiliar problems thoughtfully, choose appropriate strategies, and apply what they know in new situations.

Individual Growth

Course placement and academic challenge help students continue developing their mathematical abilities at an appropriate level.

Course Placement

Placement With Purpose

Brandon Academy’s mathematics faculty considers each student’s current understanding, readiness, and academic progress when determining appropriate course placement.

The goal is to provide the right level of challenge so students can continue building confidence, fluency, and strong mathematical habits.

Mathematics Across the Middle Years

Grade 6 Mathematics

Grade 6 Mathematics strengthens critical-thinking skills and core mathematical concepts while preparing students for increasingly advanced coursework.

Students continue developing number sense, algebraic thinking, geometry, measurement, statistics, probability, and problem-solving skills.

Grade 7 Mathematics

Grade 7 Mathematics deepens students’ understanding of algebra, geometry, statistics, measurement, and probability while building confidence with increasingly complex problems.

Pre-Algebra

Pre-Algebra extends concepts developed in earlier Middle School mathematics courses and introduces the algebraic thinking students need for formal algebra.

Honors Algebra I

Honors Algebra I develops a strong foundation in algebraic reasoning, equations, functions, and problem solving while preparing students for future High School mathematics courses.

Mathematical Maturity

More Than Finding an Answer

Mathematics is about more than reaching the correct answer. Students learn to explain their reasoning, select appropriate strategies, recognize patterns, and apply mathematical ideas in different contexts.

These habits help students approach unfamiliar problems with greater confidence, persistence, and independence.

Skills That Build Toward High School

Algebraic Thinking

Students recognize patterns, work with variables, and develop greater fluency with equations, inequalities, and algebraic relationships.

Geometry and Measurement

Students explore geometric relationships, measurement, formulas, and properties in both two and three dimensions.

Data and Statistics

Students learn to collect, interpret, analyze, and communicate information using data and statistical reasoning.

Probability

Students analyze chance, compare possible outcomes, and develop an understanding of probability in mathematical and real-world situations.

Mathematical Applications

Students apply mathematical thinking to practical situations, multi-step problems, and unfamiliar challenges.
